Some brief summaries

About the collective

The works of 3Steps have developed from Mural Art and Street Art. The collective paints colorful neo pop images on facades and murals as well as several kinds of paintable media in the studio. The body of work of 3Steps contains mural art, street art, paintings on wood and canvas, photographs, screenprints as well as sculptures and installations.
Most of the mixed media paintings consist of a collage of newspapers, magazines, photographs, stencil works, spray paint, acrylic, resin and screenprinting on wood and canvas.

3Steps was founded in autumn 1998. The works of 3Steps can be found around the entire globe and were published in several international books and magazines. The members of the collective studied in Giessen, Zurich, Darmstadt and Oestrich-Winkel. After completing their university studies with diploma and award-winning PhD, the three friends founded their studio and art space in Giessen in 2012. Since then they devote themselves to new content driven topics and projects.

After doing Graffiti and Street Art for more than 15 years – after studying science and working in various branches for 12 years – we believe that taking focus on realizing the ideas that come to our mind is the best way to change the world. There are always three steps to go…

In November 2014, they were awarded by the Federal Government of Germany for their artistic visions and their entrepreneurship with the title “Kultur und Kreativpiloten Deutschland 2014” (Cultural and Creative Pilots Germany 2014). In april 2015 the collective was with it’s artproject “STELLART art for space” one of the three winners at the StartUp Weekend Space 2015 in Bremen. In summer 2015 a main project of the collective was funded by Department of Science and Arts of Hesse (Hessisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst).

Works and technique

Today‘s style of 3Steps includes influences of street art, style writing, photorealism, printmaking and pop art. In its current works 3Steps reflects today’s life, characterized by varying environments from reality, fiction, media and fantasy. The works are colorful imageries in which aesthetics and glamour melt into urban culture and adventure. The collective further debates the transformation of ordinariness and urban space in aesthetical glamour, as shown in the telephone series of the collective.
The collective looks in content into the controversy of real existing parallel worlds. It’s about the question: Who are we? What do we want to be and what do we desire? Things that we are looking for – things that we want – things that we adore. Sometimes it’s the little things in life that make us feel glamorous and inspire our imagination. And sometimes the existing has to become even greater.

Central theme of the works of 3Steps are motifs that tell the viewer a special story. Artistically 3Steps uses characters, moments and scenes of everyday life as important elements. Seemingly exaggerated productions – yet real – reflect life, which moves between glamour and urban culture. Aesthetics and femininity are faced with adventure and masculinity. Poppy and intense colors and clear patterns are to express the urban glamour through their own language.

The base of their works are the own portrait and fashion photographs as well as views and architecture of urban cityscapes. Therefore 3Steps engages impressions, which they have held during their travels in the urban centers of Europe and America. In their paintings hard edges and lines hit soft contours and facets, pop art and realism blend with color-intensive elements of urban expression.
The portfolio of 3Steps contains works ranging from large-format mural art via street art, paintings on wood and canvas, photographs and prints to installations. Paintings are often created from a collage of magazines, photographs, stencils, spray paints, acrylic paints and hard varnish as well silkscreen on wood or canvas.

History

The twins Kai and Uwe know Joe since fivth grade in school. They spent their school time together and later they discovered their common passion of painting, crafting and the interrest of the young graffiti culture.
Initially influenced by the classical New York style writing and the urban graffiti culture of the 80s and 90s the three school friends founded the graffiti crew “Three Steps Ahead” in autumn 1998 – from which the current short form “3Steps” emerged later on. They quickly discovered their shared passion for visual arts and large format murals.

In the end of the 2000s, the three artists became internationally known within the graffiti scene through the combination of content-driven conversions of realistic figures and illustrative stories and the color and aesthetically coordinated graffiti styles of the twins. Characters and their stories played a central role, while classical graffiti elements and graphic patterns endure as design elements. Since then they leave arts in copious countries and cities of the world from Giessen, Wetzlar, Munich, Berlin over to London, Milan, Venice, L.A. and New York. Their conceptual joint productions transformed, influenced by their travels since 2007, more and more from classical graffiti art and street art to an urban pop art collage. Lots of their art were published in several international books and magazines.

Growing up in a small university town in the country, the collective reflects media and urban landscapes of cities their own way. Important for the collective are the regional countryside as well as the relationship between mankind and nature. These topics are in part represented by patterns and colors of wildlife in their work. Influenced by the media revolution in the 80s and 90s 3Steps takes focus on bright colors, vivid imagery and simple patterns. After their high school studies the three moved to a new large studio in the heart of the city of Giessen in the summer of 2012. Founding of the studio was a fresh start for the three friends in establishing and creating their artist identity.
